Dame Zandra Rhodes
Fashion designer
What was the most memorable part of the experience?
I was able to do drawings each day... which was revitalising for me
Spending precious time with interesting people, especially Henry with his golden voice that I'd experienced through Radio 4 cricket, and fun dress up time with Britt and the girls.
What surprised you the most?
I was most surprised that we came to The Gratitude [the homestead] and had stayed there before!
What was your role within the group?
Susie and I loved going to the gardens and collecting the tamarind pods and veg for making tomato chutney.
Did the experience allow you time to reflect?
I was able to do drawings each day before the day started which was revitalising for me. Susie also did lovely drawn memories.
Did you learn anything about yourself?
I learnt more about other people! I loved getting to know the group - it was so interesting with all of our own idiosyncrasies.
Would you return to India?
Any time! Just ask! India is one of my most favourite countries to visit.
Tell us about one of your adventures…
I loved the night train ride to Madurai, the Chithirai Festival then the wonderful sleeper bus home where (while it was light) I photographed the mad coloured houses which I then drew later. Also visiting my wonderful old embroidery studios where all of my beaded dress were made in Chennai was something very special.
