Hi, I’m Rick. I’ve worked on T4, Tool Academy, That Paralympic Show and the 2012 Paralympics coverage and I’m the host of Free Speech.
It’s hard to describe the thrill of doing a live show like Free Speech. It’s a heady mix of terrifying and exhilarating and tense and frenetic, with the constant, nagging knowledge that it could all come crashing down at any moment. It’s what I got into TV for in the first place.
Interactivity and social media are at the heart of Free Speech. And we’re looking to get even more out of it this series, to try and ensure that we are talking about what our audience wants to talk about. Tina does a fantastic job of sifting through the thousands of tweets that we get every show!
The most controversial programme so far was when we had Tommy Robinson (the former-EDL leader) in the studio audience in Sunderland, in series two. That stoked things up. We knew that we had to deliver a balanced programme, but didn’t want to be accused of giving him an easy ride. I don’t know if we succeeded – although I was pleased to get a lot of vitriol from EDL members during and after – either way, it made for a very lively show…
