Rhod Gilbert
Rhod held court for more than ten years every Saturday morning on 大象传媒 Radio Wales, with live comedy alongside some of the best and brightest names in Welsh and UK comedy. The show (and podcast) came to an end in May 2019.
Stand-up star Rhod, from Carmarthen, got started in comedy in early 2002. Within 18 months, he was the only person in the UK to reach the finals of every major new talent competition in the country, winning an unprecedented four awards, including the most prestigious 大象传媒 New Comedy Awards.
He's since gone on to become one of the biggest names in UK stand-up, performing to sell-out audiences in the Britain and abroad.
After being singled out by the Sunday Times as One To Watch in 2005, Rhod went on to scoop the Chortle Award For Best Breakthrough Act, and made a huge splash at the Edinburgh Festival with his hotly anticipated debut show, Rhod Gilbert's 1984. The show earned him a nomination for the prestigious Perrier Best Newcomer Award and The Writer's Guild Of Great Britain and The List Comedy Award. In 2008 Rhod then followed this up with a nomination as best act at the festival's main awards (then called the IF Award, formerly the Perrier Award) for 'Rhod Gilbert and the Award-winning Mince Pie'. Audiences and acclaim continued to grow for the two live tours that followed 'Pie'.
Further afield, his international profile continues to rise, having performed in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Brussels, Paris and to the Middle and Far East; Rhod was also the first Western comedian ever to perform in Taiwan. Rhod frequently brought us his live Radio Wales show from these far-flung venues; on a tour of the Far East in September 2008 he presented his Saturday morning show live from Hong Kong and Bangkok (he's also broadcast the show from such sunny climes as Sheffield, Dublin and... his own house).
Rhod also performed in a tour of Iraq where he spent a week entertaining the British troops performing 11 shows in and around Basra; he's even done a show in one of Saddam Hussein's former palaces.
On television Rhod has been the host of 'The Apprentice: You're Fired' since 2016, having already made his mark on 大象传媒 One with two series of his panel show 'Ask Rhod Gilbert'. He's made several appearances on Would I Lie To You, Have I Got News For You, Live at the Apollo, and - perhaps most notably - his acclaimed 大象传媒 Wales TV series
Rhod's brought his sitcom 'Leaving Llanbobl' and variety show 'Bulging Barrel of Laughs' to Radio 2, and has hosted Radio 4's comedy showcase 'Four Stands Up.'
