MacMaster

Played by Stephen Graham

Christopher’s colleague and confidant Vincent MacMaster is a civil servant and amateur critic. His recently published essays on Rossetti have earned him a place on the London literary circuit, and he embraces this new status, throwing elaborate parties for artists and writers. While Christopher wrestles with his conscience, MacMaster is impulsive and has no trouble beginning an affair with Edith Duchemin – despite the fact that Edith is already married to a deranged reverend.
