Martin Beck
锘縒hen the series begins the year is 1965 and Martin Beck is a Detective Inspector in the Stockholm Homicide Squad. He is 42 years old.
He has no high opinion of himself and no ambitions to be Chief Inspector and yet there are people who consider him to be the finest investigating officer in the country. He is most famous for his flashes of intuition, which lead him to solve even the most hopeless cases. Beck himself is reluctant to place too much value on this quality, knowing that nothing can substitute thorough, methodical investigation.

Beck is an unassuming and unlikely hero: thoughtful and compassionate but dyspeptic and unhappy. The difficult cases keep him awake at night, but his gloom is leavened by his dry wit. Thin, not especially tall and somewhat round-shouldered, some women might call him handsome but most would call him ordinary. He always has a cold or a stomach-ache, he smokes too much and is unhappily married to Inga. He has two children, a boy and a girl. He is close to the girl but not the boy. In the early books he has taken to sleeping on the sofa and he spends his spare time building model boats.
