Augustus Cribben
Cribben is the master of the Crickley Hall orphanage in World War Two.
He suffered a head injury in the Blitz which destroyed his peace of mind. As his mental health deteriorates, he becomes increasingly strict with the orphans in his care. He becomes obsessed with the runaway orphan he was chasing when the bomb hit him, German refugee Stefan. Cribben suffers from terrible migraines and demands peace and quiet at all times. The punishments for infractions are severe and obsessively recorded in his ledger. When Cribben鈥檚 psychosis is uncovered and his treatment of the orphans threatens to go public, it pushes him over the edge.
