Successful and self-made – building a brewery up from nothing – his life’s purpose is making his family safe; though his actions often have the opposite effect by undermining them.
Maurice is theoretically in retirement and has handed over the reins of the brewery to his son Eddie, but the fact that he still retains ownership gives him the opportunity to keep getting involved in the business. It's an opportunity he doesn't resist, especially when he needs to displace something emotional he can't handle.
Maurice finds Joe’s situation particularly hard to take – he’s a fixer and Joe can’t be fixed, at least not in the way Maurice understands.
