The starting gun is fired for the race to be leader of Germany's biggest party as Chancellor Merkel announces she will not seek another term, the US sees deepening divides over race and religion as the country prepares to vote in midterm elections, and a spinal implant that appears to trigger damaged nerves to regrow, helping the paralysed to walk.
