Working with other writers
Finding a writing partner

Music papers, music shop noticeboards, local papers, youth clubs, practice studios, gig venues, and colleges are all tried and tested ways of meeting other musicians. Music courses are also a good way of meeting people of similar ability. Even if you're not on a course yourself, ring up the tutor, tell them what you have in mind and ask if they can help.

Another good place for songwriters to meet is at open mic nights. Many songwriters use these as a place to try out new songs and get feedback on their work. Pubs often operate these nights - usually midweek when business is quieter. You are likely to meet a range of levels, from people who are starting out to those who have been on the circuit for years. Successful artists will even use a low profile venue from time to time to try out material.

I get recommended people, or meet people through friends or over. lunch.

Another way of meeting people who write songs is by going to gigs. You are more likely to meet people who are interested in the same music, if they are at the same gig as you. Also you have a chance to judge straight away if the person is someone you can get on with - essential if you are going to be spending time writing together.

Songwriters can also be found via organisations such as Songlink International, or the British Academy of Songwriters and Composers. Both of these have websites with databases matching songwriters to other musicians.
The NME is an obvious place to put an advert for potential band members, and it works. There's also the Noticeboard in the free ads paper Loot.

Remember to play it safe if you are meeting a completely new person. Let someone know where you are going and when you are coming back. Make your own way there and back from the meeting, and meet in a public place. Don't give out your address until you are sure the person is genuine.

hi this is in reply to miranda from london i am a poet/lyricist who is looking for someone who is good with the musical side as i am struggling!!! was wondering if you would be interested in meeting up to discuss possibility of working together? my genre tends to be rnb/soul and ballads but am up for experimenting as i love all musical genres! i am very serious about this. If you are interested then please post a message here and i will respond. hope to hear from you very soon x

i see what u mean, but on your own you have to be at least reasonable at the lyrical side and the melodic. I find it hard to write the lyrics but am fine with the music - so I think i'll just fine a poet...

I've just done a course on music. I have a song writing partner who I find really hard to write with. I had never wrote a song before and thought it was me. I started writing songs on my own and saw a change. I soon learnt that it is important to learn on your own. I find if you just start writing with someone else, the music is a kind of mush between what they want to do, and what you want to do. Its hard to write a song that you like, and then show it to someone else but if you want to be a good writer youhave to get over that first fear. Good Luck!
