Life After Death
by Sixties Relic
A little metaphysical speculation, from the Fantasy Archers topic of .
The last thing that Amanda saw as her car somersaulted across the motorway was the large lorry bearing down on her…
***
Amanda sat up, confused to find herself sitting on a the grass of a familiar looking village green. "Where on earth can I be?" She muttered to herself.
A rather rustic looking man appeared from nowhere and chuckled.
"Nowhere on Earth, actually. You have just died. This is - er - Ambridge. Don't you recognise me? Eddie Grundy, please to meet you."
Amanda stood up, brushed herself down and glared at the stranger. He did look like Eddie Grundy, but what on earth was he talking about?
"What do you mean, I have died? How ridiculous. And if I have, what am I doing in Ambridge?"
Eddie chuckled again, and tried to explain. "You are actually in what you humans call heaven. It is a bit complicated, the quantum physics that lies behind all this, but you are just going to have to get used to it. Most people find it very confusing at first. You are in Ambridge because that is where you have wanted to be, most of your life. What you call "heaven" - or the afterlife, or nirvana, or whatever, is constructed by you during your lifetime. It is where you really, really want to be. I am right, aren't I?" he added gently.
Amanda was furious. "Of course not!" She exclaimed. "I expected to see my husband, who died two years ago, and my parents. And my old granny. Where are they?"
She looked around desperately, but all she could see was the village pond, and the pub - yes it was the Bull - across the green.
Eddie took her arm and shepherded her towards the Bull. "Come on, I'll buy you a drink, and introduce you to Sid and Jolene. No, your husband and parents are not here. They didn't listen to The Archers, did they? Nor spend hours posting stuff on he message board? They have gone to their own version of heaven."
Amanda looked puzzled. "But aren't they expecting me to be in their heavens? And I still don't understand why they are not in mine."
"Eddie smiled, and said, gently, "Come on Amanda, old girl, admit it. You didn't actually like your hubbie very much, did you? And you really couldn't stand your parents, either. You much preferred Brian, and Ian, and even David and Ruth to your real life family.
"You get to meet them all, now. You really will enjoy it. For ever and ever."
