Tom Archer sighed as the text came through. He checked the screen and then threw the phone onto the table. His sister Helen watched him.
"Aren't you going to take that, Tom?", she said.
"No", he snapped. "It'll just be another from Brenda. I'm sooorreeeee, forgiiiiiive me, the usual."
"Well she is sorry, Tom, she's devastated".
"Yeah, well she should have thought of that before she tried to involve me with a crook. She could have ruined everything. I can't forgive her".
"Has she texted often?" asked Helen.
"About every ten minutes. I stopped reading them last night."
Although now Tom thought about it, he remembered that actually only one other message had come through the previous evening, and that this was the first for about 12 hours.
"Anyway, I'm not reading it. I'm too busy. Thanks to her, Matt, Brian all betraying me, I've got to not only run the business, I've got to sort out a bank loan - do you realise that Helen, I've got to arrange my OWN money because she betrayed me. Why does everyone betray me?"
Helen picked up the phone.
"Look, I'll read them to you, you can't leave it just hanging on."
She pressed the 'read' button.
"This is the one from last night. It's quite a long message, and it's written in txt spk. Uummm, I'll try to translate.
'Hi Tom. I keep saying I'm sorry and I am. If I could have the time over, I'd do it differently, surely you must have had times like that? Anyway, the reason I've been trying to speak to you is that Dad's got some money. Roy has got his mortgage so Dad's been paid back the money for the conversion and a bit over. He wants to offer it to us as a long term loan. It wouldn't be enough to do everything you want, but it would get you free of Brian and let you start afresh and run the company how you want to. Let me know. Love you. Bren.' "
Tom stood transfixed. This was marvellous! He could get rid of Brian and bring the brand back to Bridge Farm.
"But... that's perfect", he stuttered.
"Hang on, I haven't read the most recent one yet", said Helen.
" 'Tom, you haven't replied to any of my texts so I assume you aren't interested in Dad's offer, that's what I've told him anyway. This is to say I've been back to No 1 The Green, taken all my stuff and left my key. I'm planning to get some serious work done in the next few weeks and I won't be out and about much, so it's unlikely we'll bump into each other. As soon as I finish Uni, I'm going to try to get an internship somewhere away from Ambridge. I never should have come back really, it was silly of me. Anyway, good luck. Bye.' "
Silently Helen handed Tom back his phone and walked away.
Tom read the last two texts twice. This couldn't be happening - another chance missed, and then dumped... by a Tucker?
No, surely not, there must be a mistake?
