Programme Details
Friday 12 Sept 2003
This year the joint 大象传媒 and RGS prize for the most adventurous and unusual dream travel idea - a Journey of a Lifetime - went to journalists Andy Home and Grigori Gerenstein.
Journalists Andy Home and Grigori Gerenstein - winners of this year's Royal Geographical Society's Journey of a Lifetime award - visit Russia's most polluted town where the snow is black and life expectancy is 10 years below the national average.
But it's here that Russia is turning one of its most Soviet of industrial plants into a commercial success on the world market - and for Andy and Grigori, to venture into the Siberian mineral mines of Norilsk is the Journey of a Lifetime.
Fancy going on your own JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME?
The RGS and the 大象传媒 are now inviting applicants for this year's prize: it consists of a bursary to cover the costs of your expedition and a guaranteed radio documentary to be broadcast next autumn on Radio 4.
