This Sceptred Isle

George II and Turnip Townsend
In 1727 George II acceded to the throne. George II sacked Walpole and asked Sir Spencer Compton to form a Government. This proved impossible. Compton had scant support in Parliament. Queen Caroline understood the balance in Parliament and convinced George to recall Walpole.

Walpole's policy was to sort out the problems within the nation and avoid foreign adventures, especially those dear to the King -namely involving Hanover.

Most men in Government were used to the glories of European wars and found it difficult to ignore European politics. But, Charles Townshend was one of those dismissed for being too adventurous in foreign affairs.

George II was the last reigning British monarch to command in battle. He commanded the allied army in the Low Countries during the War of Austrian Succession and was criticized for wearing Hanoverian colours for the occasion.

JOHN HERVEY'S MEMOIR OF GEORGE II'S ATTITUDE TO THE ENGLISH
"No English or even French cook could dress a dinner; no confectioner set out a dessert; no English player could act; no English coachman could drive or English jockey ride, nor were any English horses fit to be rove or fit to be ridden; no Englishman knew how to come into a room, or any English woman how to dress herself, nor were there any diversions in England, public or private, nor any man or woman in England whose conversation was to be borne - the one as he said, talking of nothing but their dull politics, and the other nothing but their ugly clothes....".
