A Coronation as War Looms
In 1937 George VI was crowned King. Stanley Baldwin resigned and Neville Chamberlain became Prime Minister. The Japanese bombed Shanghai and the Germans bombed Guernica.
The Government produced their plans to evacuate London in wartime and for air-raid shelters to be built. In 1937 Germany signed a treaty with Japan in order to contain Communism. Germany had signed a treaty with Italy the year before.
In Ireland the Irish Free State became Eire.
Ramsay MacDonald died and Clement Atlee became the Leader of the Labour Party.

- Did much to raise morale during wartime, remaining in residence at Buckingham Palace and visiting bombsites in the capital
