Domesday William was not just a conqueror but had a real desire to rule and wanted the English to accept his right to rule. He wanted to be legitimate. He adopted the Old English powers and in the first years of his reign kept Edward the Confessor's courtiers and lords at court. Inevitably, though, there was controversy over the Normans claiming lands, titles and especially bishoprics and abbeys. In 1086 William declared that he wanted to know who owned what and it should all be written down in a book called the Domesday Book. Behind Domesday was the need to raise money as well as find out who had the financial power in England. Domesday was a momentous achievement in the development of English feudal society.
