Julia Jones, Modern Matron at Bradford District Care Trust's Lynfield Mount Hospital with Raj Persaud

Bradford
This week Dr Raj Persaud leaves London and the studio far behind and catches a train north to Bradford. The reason - to see for himself some of the ground-breaking initiatives that mental health services in Bradford are pioneering. There's a huge variety, but the core value of them all is that the patient comes first - they're committed to delivering what the service user needs and wants rather than what the service providers think they need.
The model they employ is called 'post-psychiatry'. It was developed by Pat Bracken and Phil Thomas, two consultant psychiatrists at the forefront of a movement called Critical Psychiatry. They were determined to deliver mental health services which really addressed the problems facing service users, believing that unless you confront the day to day pressures that poverty brings you have little hope of improving a person's mental health.
In the course of his day in Bradford Raj meets:-
Dr Phil Thomas, Consultant Psychiatrist with Bradford District Care Trust, in charge of the Assertive Outreach Team and a Senior Research Fellow at the School of Health Studies, Bradford University.
Julia Jones, Modern Matron in charge of acute wards at Lynfield Mount Hospital.
Peter Relton, Service User Development Worker with Bradford District Care Trust's Home Treatment Team.
