| | | | CANNABIS and PSYCHOSIS New research is underway at the south London and Maudsley听hospital to map the human brain while volunteers are being given marijuana to see what affect the drug has on the mind.听 Dr Zerrin Atakan a psychiatrist at Lambeth hospital explains what will happen.
Dr Raj Persaud asks Leslie Iversen, Professor of pharmacology at Oxford University and Professor Robin Murray from Institute of Psychiatry at the Maudsley hospital about the possible links between cannabis and psychosis.
TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION and DEPRESSION
Dr Raj Persaud meets Dr Declan McLoughlin and Dr Paul Shotbolt at Institute of Psychiatry to find out about new research into Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.听 It is hoped the treatment could replace ECT in the future.听 Dr Persaud volunteers to test this new less invasive technique to find out how it works and how it feels.
HYPOCHONDRIA
Should we start treating hypochondria as a distinct psychological condition?听 One in ten people are periodally over-concerned about their health.听 Denmark has deemed the problem so important that a clinic has been set up to deal with patients who suffer from hypochondria or health anxiety.
Dr Raj Persaud talks to two experts Morten Birket-Smith Director of the Psychiatric Clinic at Bispebjerg Hospital in Copenhagen in Denmark and Professor Paul Salkovskis, the Clinical Director at the Centre for Anxiety Disorder and Trauma at the Maudsley hospital to find out why we should stop laughing at hypochondriacs and start taking the problem seriously.
