HAPPINESS
Do people nowadays have happier lives than people of previous generations who had less?

The economist Professor Richard Layard, talks to Raj Persaud about his belief that the happiness of the individual and society as a whole does not necessarily equate to income. 听In his new book called Happiness Professor Layard identifies the 'Big Seven' causes of happiness and unhappiness.听 He shows how we can spoil our own happiness by not 'parking' negative thought patterns and suggests that we need to change as individuals and stop measuring ourselves against what we perceive others to have.

CITY NURSES
Last week the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) issued new guidance on the management of violent behaviour in acute psychiatric wards.听 Conflict on hospital wards has long been a problem for both patients and staff. Violent or disturbed behaviour frequently endangers both patients and staff, and is stressful, time consuming and costly to manage.

Raj Persaud meets Lawford Cluff, ward manager at St Clements acute psychiatric ward in East London.听 For the last four months they have been putting the City Nurses project to the test. The project aims to improve services offered to young people with a serious mental illness by helping them make better use of the services provided.听 The overall aim is to reduce potential conflicts between them and the professional service providers.

Raj Persaud is joined by Len Bowers, Professor of Psychiatric Nursing, City University to discuss how the project is helping to address conflict issues and Jackie Chandler-Oatts, Project Manager of the Royal College of Nursing for the National Institute for Clinical Excellence explains the new NICE guidelines.

POSITIVE AGEING FEEDBACK
Following last week's discussion about living longer better, Raj Persaud hears from listeners Steve Robinson, Betty Preston and Judith Robinson.听 If you would like to share your views and experiences, please e-mail All In The Mind.

10% BRAIN
Neuroscientists say the idea that we use only 10% ofour brain is a myth despite the fact that many of us still believe it.听 Barry Beyerstein, Professor of Psychology and a member of the Brain Behaviour Laboratory at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada, discusses with Raj Persaud his research findings into the scientific evidence of how we use our brains and explains what it would mean if we really did use only 10% of our brain.
