Programme 4: Salmon
Sunday 17 August, 2.45-3.00pm

Three hundred and fifty years ago, the River Dove teemed with Salmon. Sadly, owing to pollution, industry and agriculture, the breeding population of salmon declined, and salmon became extinct. But in recent years, a re-introduction scheme has been successful in the first steps to transforming the Dove to its former status.

The programme joins David Hunter, Company Secretary of the Trent Salmon Trust and Gary Cyster, Fisheries Technical Officer for the Upper Trent region of the Environment Agency as they re-stock the river with Salmon parr, which have been raised in a hatchery in Kielder, Northumberland. This is the sixth year of re-stocking and brings the total number of fish restocked into the River Dove to 戮 million to date.

Adult salmon which have returned to the River Dove from the sea have been sighted and this is a very encouraging sign that the re-introduction programme is proving successful. Salmon redds have also been seen, evidence that the salmon are breeding in the River Dove. The re-introduction programme will need to continue for probably at least another ten years befreo the population will be self-sustaining, but the signs to date are very encouraging.

The programme follows the re-introduction in progress, and reflects on the past history of the River Dove, and the aspirations of David Hunter and others for the future of this river. Extracts from The Compleat Angler about salmon and salmon fishing are also included in the programme.
