Protecting The Roof Of Europe
The highest peaks across all continents are protected, except Mont Blanc in Europe.
Ten million people visit the Alps every year bringing in a wealth of euros to the area, but also making it the most industrialised and urbanised mountain region on the planet.
This influx of people is having a damaging effect on its delicate, and rich ecosystem. The Alps encapsulate almost all of the planet's problems related to over-development, pollution, species loss and cultural erosion. But, straddling several countries, within the 鈥渁rc鈥 of the Alps there is also the potential know-how and听finances to solve the problems.
Biologically rich, the Alps are diverse in fauna and flora. Yet when used as a 鈥渉oliday playground鈥 their environment suffers. Local communities become totally dependent on the income of tourists which encourages more development and more habitat loss.
Wild Europe explores the threats to听Mont Blanc and the听Alps from mass tourism, and looks at how the unique mountain fauna and flora can be protected while tourism continues to expand. | | |
