Britain’s first female Apache helicopter pilot on flying combat missions in Afghanistan
When Charlotte Madison was at her girls’ boarding school she and her friends joined the local Combined Cadet Force, primarily as a way to meet members of the opposite sex. As other girls lost interest in the army Charlotte continued, and after university she started on a series of training courses which finally led her to become the first woman to qualify as a pilot of Apache helicopters. She went on to do three tours of duty in Afghanistan, and joins Jenni to talk about what it was like to be at the controls of a helicopter taking part in active combat.
