Women in Criminal Justice System |

New figures show that the majority of female prisoners reoffend within two years of being released, which is now as high male reoffending. The crimes that women commit are also changing with a sharp increase in convictions for robbery and violence. There are still far more men than women in jail but the numbers of women in prison are growing at twice the rate as men.
The Prison Reform Trust are asking for radical changes in the way women are treated in the criminal justice system. Are too many women going to prison, or should women who commit crime simply accept the consequences? And what can be done to stop the re-offending?
Katherine Rake, Director of the Fawcett Society and Jacqui Lait MP, Shadow Home Affairs spokesman join Martha to discuss.
