On the emotion of envy
Envy is the title of the American writer Kathryn Harrison鈥檚 latest novel and, as one might expect, it鈥檚 also a major theme in the plot.听 The main character is Will, a psychoanalyst in his 40s, who has a twin brother Mitch. The brothers are identical except that Mitch was born with a disfiguring birth mark on his face.
As the story progresses, it becomes clear that Mitch is envious of his brother鈥檚 鈥渘ormal鈥 appearance and the strength of his emotions leads to tragic consequences. Martha Kearney discusses envy with Kathryn Harrison and Martin Palmer, an expert on world religions.
Envy by Kathryn Harrison, is published by Fourth Estate.
