Traffic calming measures

The Comhairle has announced it intends to introduce a 20 mph speedlimit along sections of Matheson Road at certain times of the day. This is to ensure the safety of pupils of the nearby Nicolson Institute, crossing the road into the town centre or vice versa early in the morning, at lunchtime and at the end of the schoolday. The speedlimits would only apply at those times.

Misgivings have already been aired against this proposal, because Matheson Road is used as a convenient shortcut to by-pass Stornoway town centre. It would lead to congestion at the roundabout which is the junction with James Street and Sandwick Road. Those wishing to circumvent the town centre could of course also use Moss End, Anderson Road and Perceval Road South.

That's news to me. What are they gonna do Arnish erect more signs, and spend a fortune on a survey to see if it is viable or not. Then have a few meetings, wait to see what the general concencus is and then do the opposite of what everyone wants. Well it isn't their money their spending is it?

Hullo everybody: just wanted to let you know that an extensive travel article on Harrris & Lewis made it in the Washington Post's Sunday 12th. edition. Accessible on the internet. More Americans your way, I suspect...

I don't think the schoolchildren should be crossing at more than 20 mph. They should save their enrgy for sports day and the 2012 olympics

Ye Gods! Whatever happened to the English language? Is texting taking over the world? I'd be curious to see a Burns ode in this new language....

jas from central belt

jas: Was that English Burns wrote in? The first time I gave my younger daughter a book of poems by Burns to read, she burst out laughing at the incomprehensibility of it all: but she persisted, with the help of a university edition containing explanation of some of the more recondite terms. I must admit that I need all the help I can get myself ...

hey we aint all bad. I'm 18 and cant stand text talk

mjc: As a lowland Scot myself I do have to 'fess up and say that there are times I do need to stop and think about what he has written to get the gist of it. Burns was best known for writing in Scots dialect, however he did write over a hundred poems in standard English. There is a little book available called 'The English Poetry of Robert Burns' compiled by Eileen Doris Bremner.
