the second stitch is buttonhole stitch, when I was looking at other peoples samples I noticed they were what we here in britain call blanket stitch and some of the people in britian had commented on this difference, so I thought I would take a look at Sharon’s example and yes what the aussies call buttonhole stitch we here in britian call blanket stitch, so I have done both blanket and buttonhole stitch on my sample,
the difference is a loop at the top which gives a small knot on the british buttonhole stitch, this knot is because where as the edge of a blanket does not get a great deal of wear the edge of a buttonhole gets lots of wear with the button passing through it and the extra knot of thread makes it stronger, I am not giving stitch directions but for those who know how to do blanket stitch, to make the knot in buttonhole stitch you wrap the thread all the way around the needle before pulling through instead of just passing it around the back of the needle, clear as mud no doubt,
the first thing I learnt with this sample is I have used too light a colour thread as the dark spots in the paper dominate I really wish now I had used a dark thread….are well…., on the right around the little gold mesh squares is blanket stitch and all the rest is buttonhole stitch, I felt I couldn’t do a sample of buttonhole stitch without putting some buttons on it somewhere,

Once again you bring a different dimension to functional stitches. A buttoned button (where you can still see part of the buttonhole) always makes me think of an eye, and the way you've done the stitches makes them a bit like eyelashes.

Blanket stitch was the first ever needlework we were shown at primary school. I think I was about eight years old then and very proud when I presented my Mum with a round pin cushion. It was blue with a cat on the front and edging all the way around in green thread using the blanket stitch. Buttonhole stitch, never heard of it.
