March
sun and rain, sun and rain,
and over the valley:
two rainbows
April
two cherry trees,
dressed in white blossom -
and the Clee looks on,
flaunting snow
May
hush! -
the bat's wings flap like a moth's
(lesser horseshoes flutter, flutter by)
June
an open window
a warm breeze
the sound of a horse, breaking
wind
July
twitter twitter in the thistles:
twenty goldfinch
skip away
August
by the nettlebed
the flycatcher waits -
and hops into the haze
September
two travellers,
snoozing in the porch -
the swallows are leaving us
October
chitter chatter
in the holly -
the redwings are here!
November
hoar frosts -
and the holly berries
are disappearing
December
day dawns, grey -
I look at the Clee,
wanting to hear
the lapwing's cry
January
flocks of fieldfare
flocks of starling
together in the tree,
singing
February
West Hope,
white sprinkled -
not snow,
but snowdrops
