Leeds United claimed only their second home league win of the season as they overcame promotion hopefuls Hull City at Elland Road.

Chris Wood put the hosts ahead from close range with a crisp finish from Stuart Dallas' cross.

And Alex Mowatt's shot hit the bar for Leeds before Tom Adeyemi slammed in a shot to double the lead.

Ahmed Elmohamady headed in from close range, and Chuba Akpom missed a great chance to level as Leeds hung on.

Hull had the better of a quiet opening before a small group of home fans left their seats after 17 minutes in a 'pie tax' protest against planned ticket price increases.

United were unaffected and went ahead when Lewis Cook put Dallas away down the right and his inch-perfect cross was stabbed home by Wood.

Mowatt almost made it 2-0 when he pressured Harry Maguire into a mistake and smacked a shot against the woodwork.

And the Whites went further ahead on the stroke of half-time when Cook's shot was blocked by Allan McGregor, and Adeyemi reacted quickest to score his first Leeds goal.

The visitors improved after the break and got back into the game when Elmohamady powered in a header from Sam Clucas' precise cross.

The Tigers poured forward, with Jake Livermore forcing a good save from Marco Silvestri and Akpom heading wide late on with the goal at his mercy.

But Hull slipped to their second straight defeat as their miserable record at Elland Road worsened to 14 defeats in 21 games.

Leeds head coach Steve Evans:

"It is always fine margins, but the level of intensity in our performance was excellent and we turned round deservedly 2-0 up.

"We were strong all over the park and the supporters were fantastic.

"I thought their goal was a foul - he was all over our full-back. We had to work very hard, but how we didn't get a penalty for the foul on Lewis Cook I will never know."

Hull manager Steve Bruce:

"We've had an awful week. That first 45 minutes was as bad as I have seen from us since I came here.

"I don't give a monkey's what names are on the shirts, but the next time we play I will have a team that shows the right attitude.

"You have to win your headers and tackles and earn the right to play. We did that in the second half when we were relentless, but the first half was unacceptable.

"If we are going to challenge (for promotion) we have to make sure we do better than that."
