Wrexham's automatic promotion hopes suffered a blow as Tyrone Marsh's 89th-minute penalty saw them draw 1-1 at 10-man Boreham Wood in the National League.

Paul Mullin's superb volley had put Wrexham on course for victory.

But despite seeing ex-Wrexham midfielder Jamal Fyfield sent off before half-time, Boreham Wood stayed in the contest.

Marsh levelled from the spot after Tyler French's foul on Kane Smith.

Wrexham remain second in the table but slip to three points behind leaders Stockport County, who have a game in hand.

Boreham Wood threatened first, with Will Evans heading against the post before Dennon Lewis curled the rebound onto the same upright.

Jordan Davies, Luke Young and Mullin then forced saves from the impressive Wood keeper Nathan Ashmore.

Fyfield was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Davies and Wrexham improved after the break, with Mullin finishing superbly from Bryce Hosannah's cross.

Wrexham had further chances, with Mullin, Davies and Ollie Palmer going close, before Scott Boden and Jacob Mendy threatened to equalise.

Luke Garrard's team eventually levelled through Marsh to deny Wrexham a third straight victory.

Boreham Wood, in ninth, remain outsiders for the play-offs, where Wrexham look more likely to end up after a potentially pivotal day in the title race.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson:

"Very frustrated. We controlled it, weren't clinical enough to go and get the second or third. We should have been out of sight with the possession we had around the box. We just needed someone to be a bit more ruthless.

"If you can't get the second you make sure you see the game out. Tyler has got to stay on his feet. It's a poor decision, he knows that. He's a very good player - he's honest. That's proved a costly moment for us.

"We will get ready to go again - we have a great game next week. It's a setback, we can't hide away from that. We need to regroup and go again.

"The odds ae against us, we know that, but we have to make sure we get the second or third spot and go up through the play-offs. I think we are capable of doing that."
