    Jason Roy got a good ball. As an opening batsman you will get those. Jos Buttler got a similar delivery.

    Joe Root dug in. He knew how important it was to bat time. When you lose a bowler England couldn't have been bowling again today. The two happiest players will be Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad.

  6. With it looking unlikely James Anderson will be able to bowl in Australia's second innings, it was even more vital for England's top order to dig in and set a platform for the hosts to get a telling lead.

    Joe Root wasn't at his fluent best but found a way, while Rory Burns showed fantastic grit.

    Burns left the ball really well today. He made the bowlers bowl to him. Mentally, he showed he is made of strong stuff.

    Alastair Cook would have been proud of that innings. There is no greater compliment for an England opening batsman.

    That was the best day of Test match batting I have seen from England in a long, long time.

    Test match batting is back. It was a slowish wicket, with a little bit of movement but Rory Burns has arrived here Egdbaston. He was all over the shop against Ireland last week. His technique was not with him. He has gone away and worked with his coaches. He has got his hands tighter to his body and had a great gameplan. To bat all day was fantastic.
