For many years I've been criticising the England Test team for underachieveing with the bat. Over the last year, since that first innings at Headingley where they got blown away, I reckon the penny dropped that they can't play Test match cricket like this.

The right way to play is to bat a long period of time in the first innings, and I think they're starting to see a bit of the reward of that. They're not the finished article, but I see big scores in this team.

England have played the best two days of Test match cricket that I've seen for a long, long time. It's been high-class, attritional, really grinding the opposition into the dirt.

The past five or six years, England haven't had that mentality of grinding them into the dirt. This is the first time I have seen it, and that is a great sign.

More from Jos Buttler: "Jimmy bowled fantastically well. He's pretty good in those situations. It's going to be tough facing him towards the end of the day.

"Jofra looks fresh, doesn't he? That was exciting to see.

"We need to come out and bowl well. We don't need to force it, and stay patient."

We're used to Jos Buttler crashing it around but today he played a pure Test match innings. He was happy to let Crawley play the bigger strokes. I think that's a sign of a batsman maturing at this level. And I liked the fact that he got to a hundred and didn't give it away. I like to see players keep batting and stay in the here and now.

England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler: "It was a pleasure to be part of. Zak played an incredibly special knock. We talk as a side about big first-innings runs. To do that and then the wickets tonight, it's a really great day for us.

"I was very happy to play second fiddle to Zak who was scoring all around the wicket. He made the margin for error very small. It was great to watch. Not many guys hit the ball as cleanly as he does."
