Eng 11-2published at 5 overs
It's a maiden from Pat Cummins to start - of course it is, the man can do no wrong it seems.
He's either cleverly strapped a rocket launcher to his back or this is a bouncy pitch. Maybe both.

Of all the ways to start, this was not it...

James Eadon: Not faced a decent ball yet and we’re two down.
Bowser: Of course England are 11-2 inside the first 20 minutes of the series. Of course they are.
After four overs Australia captain Pat Cummins brings himself on to bowl.
Hameed 5, Root 0
More roars from this blood-thirsty crowd as Root third ball crashes into his thigh pad.
It was always going to come down to Root's runs. May as well have him in from the start.

Harry W: Thought i'd watch the first hour, then hope we were still batting when I woke up. I now hope we’re still batting when I go to sleep.
Time to earn your knighthood, Joe.

It's wonderful bowling. It's wobble seam in order to get the movement off the grassy wicket. It leaves Malan from a beautiful length.

It's the last thing England need for Joe Root to be out there now. He's got to do it again.
Malan c Carey b Hazlewood 6 (Eng 11-2)
Ah well. Here we go. Dawid Malan joins Rory Burns in slumping back to the dressing room in the first 20 minutes. Josh Hazlewood bowls a decent ball and Malan, stuck on the crease a little, gets a straightforward edge through the Alex Carey. That's the Aussie wicketkeeper's first catch in Test cricket.
Another over gone. Breathe.
Shot! That'll help Haseeb Hameed settle in. Starc goes full with his left-arm hurlers but the gritty England opener gets on the front foot to drive a boundary down the ground.

Sometime those really full, straight ones cause Burns a problem early in his innings. It won't be how Starc imagined taking his first wicket of the series.
Rory Burns' technique is already being ripped to shreds on TV and I've not even needed my first energy-boosting chocolate.
Hameed is leaving whenever he can to Starc.

Hameed 1, Malan 6
And Burns is supposed to be the opener who England fans have confidence in.
There's a little bit of swing there for Hazlewood. He's on the money from the start but I think you'll have expected that.

Groans in unison from the Gabba crowd as Hazlewood beats a tentative Haseeb Hameed prod. It's like they've just seen a gladiator meet an ugly end.

If you're watching on TV, you'll see plenty of empty seats. Apparently today is a sell-out, but there are also long lines to get in with all of the requirements around bag searches, vaccination checks, smartphones check-ins, and the rest. The place should fill up more over the next hour or two.
There you go. Don't go to bed yet folks.
Josh Hazlewood will share the new ball.
