It feels like Pat Cummins has done his homework. He has been very quick to change his bowlers when a wicket has fallen because of a potential match-up.

I do like it, but I also don't because as a bowler when you're in a rhythm and you've just taken a wicket you want to keep going.

Solid from Woakes, who is away with a push off the front foot. He might not get too many more in his half, though.

It is an excellent delivery. It was a good length and the angle going across him means it is a good riposte from Mitchell Starc.

England will be disappointed. That partnership was just building and it was threatening to be one that could England bring into some sort of position.

I fear a lot lies on Chris Woakes' head to build a partnership with Ollie Pope or Australia could be laughing come tea.

Chris Woakes is the new man. He got bombed four years ago. David Warner at first slip is already calling for a short leg.

That is a big breakthrough! Jos Buttler was just looking like he was going to settle in for a long time.

The run map shows Jos Buttler scored 39 with 5 fours, 4 threes, 2 twos, and 3 singles for England

It's the hope that kills you.

Jos Buttler's breezy counter-attack is ended by a lovely bit of bowling from Mitchell Starc. It's a rare occasion that Australia have got the length right to Buttler. Little bit of movement away, enough to take the edge.

Wide from Starc, crunched on the up by Buttler for four. 50 partnership.

The wicket is just starting to turn a little bit more yellow - it is losing that green tinge from this morning.

When Jos Buttler was playing those shots earlier you were just starting to think "hmmm, this is starting to look a good wicket".

Forward and back from Pope against Lyon. Not too much danger from the offie so far.

I am enjoying the positive attitude of these two, I must say. I like how busy Ollie Pope is. He is looking to take the game to Australia.

It is looking pretty good for England considering the position they were in this morning. This is a good sign for series because we want to see a good contest.

Aussie telly likes a camera on the field, doesn't it? We're close enough to Ollie Pope to smell his breath.

Adam Davies: Really good from Pope and Buttler. England in all sorts but can we just get something on the board to make it interesting?

The pitch does look quite good now and you're thinking about 350, but even that might not be enough.

Everything looks stacked in Australia's favour at the moment.

Jos Buttler has come out with impetus and intent.

That has been the big difference between Buttler, Hameed and Pope and the batters that got out earlier in the day, obviously in different circumstances.

Drinks. What a very curious hour of cricket. Australia are bang on top on the scoreboard and yet Jos Buttler has them under pressure.

At the 10-over mark of this partnership Jos Buttler had faced 44 balls and Ollie Pope just 16.

    Pope 30, Buttler 35

Test cricket is ridiculous. England are still in deep bother, yet it is Australia with the worried looks, concerned conversations and kicks at the turf.

That is a nice looking shot. It was beautifully timed and placed.

    Jos Buttler is playing well.

  20. Eng 107-5published at 03:36 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2021

This is the sort of pressure England want to put on the Australia attack. Buttler cuts Lyon for a couple, then plays a handsome drive for four. If the offie can't settle, the Aussies have to crank up the quicks again.
