England have to play to their strengths and pick the strongest team for those conditions. They didn't do that at the Gabba. The weather looks clear for Adelaide. For me Wood and Leach wouldn't play and I would bring in Anderson and Broad for those two.

England have been patchy. They had good spells with the ball and a good partnership with the bat. To win Test matches you need to win big moments. Whether it is lack of preparation on ability England didn't win the big moments.

Lots for Joe Root and Chris Silverwood to think about regarding selection.

I would still say even batting first England would have been better off with Broad than Leach. He should have played. Broad on fresh pitch on a first day or an up and down pitch on day five will be more effective than Jack Leach.

I did see some very disciplined bowling in the first innings. Mark Wood bowled with real pace. All three seamers did very well. The Root-Malan partnership was outstanding and set a blueprint.

Haseeb Hameed only got 20-odd in both innings but I saw enough from him soaking up the pressure. In all England's meetings now before the next Test they will look at the positive aspects of this performance and set the blueprint.

Australia don't want to see Anderson and Broad in Adelaide. Anderson, Broad and Wood would be the attack Australia would least like to see, I know Robinson played well.

It's selfie and celebration time for Australia's fans, players, former wicketkeepers and the Gabbatroopers...

England coach Chris Silverwood told BT Sport: "I think there are parts of the game we can be proud of. We showed what we can do as a team. Had we pushed on today, or taken certain moments, it might have looked very different. We got the best out of what we had regarding preparation. It was the same for both teams."

Stuart Broad's non-selection: "We left everything open and on the table. We went with Jack Leach because we wanted that variety. Our seamers created chances and it might have been different if we had taken them. I can't knock their efforts. Ollie Robinson had good control of his length and he brought that out with him here from the summer."

Toss: "Everything goes through your mind, you make a decision and go with it. At 40-4 it's not ideal and a difficult first session and we have to live with that. We will reflect on a few things before Adelaide and it's a case of resetting and going again. It's a great series to be involved in, we have to fight back now and everyone will be fresh and raring to go."

Most of the time it's flat at Adelaide, but under the lights in that dusk period it's very difficult. Someone like James Anderson could create real problems and take a lot of wickets in that kind of session.

I am surprised Stuart Broad didn't play for the Lions. He would have been better for doing so. He will have been bowling in the nets but as we have said there is no preparation like being out in the field.

I doubt Broad would have volunteered but I would have said "sorry, it will do you some good".

What changes should England make for the Adelaide Test under lights? One, or both, of Stuart Broad and James Anderson will surely come in...

Player of the match Travis Head: "I loved every minute of it. It was great to get the nod and contribute in this game.

"The partnership between David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne set it up. It was a tough wicket in stages but it was nice to take it on. We will enjoy this. I can't wait to get home. Adelaide is one of the great weeks."

On Nathan Lyon, who reached 400 wickets: "He is a fantastic bowler, came back strongly for his. He deserves all of the praise coming his way."

As a current player I look at a wicket like that, especially at the Gabba when you anticipate the pitch will dry out, I can see the logic in batting first. Looking in hindsight the best time to bowl was the first morning if you get through that morning unscathed you could have built a score.

I saw enough today to say if England had a 200-run lead it could have been very interesting. England may have been haunted by decisions of captains past.

Australia is the hardest place to go behind. They are a relentless machine and they love to get their noses in front in a home series. Brisbane is never easy place to go. But this England side have bounced back in the past.

Joe Root, told BT Sport: "We worked hard to get back in the game. We have to get better, the improvement with the bat from the first innings to the second is what we have to show throughout this series. We need to put those big totals to get ourselves in the game."

On his own form: "Personally, when I walked out I just wanted to get off a pair. We knew that a partnership could get us back in the game. We found some nice rhythm. When a couple of guys get runs it gives the rest of the team confidence. It's important we put the numbers behind us and just draw on how we can play. Australia's players probably left the ball better than we did."

Next Test in Adelaide: "We are a team who responds well to situations like this. We are not scared of a challenge or a difficult result. The toss was the right decision, but it's tough from 40-4 to get back in. I thought the seamers bowled well, but we didn't back that up in the field."

Australia captain Pat Cummins: "I am really proud of everyone. It was a complete performance. The bowlers did their thing on day one, Marnus and Davey with their big partnership, and the way Trav (Head) played is the sign of a positive, brave side.

"I was really happy with how everyone stuck to it [on day three]. We turned up today knowing we were ahead of the game.

"Trav can take the game away within a couple of hours. Everything we say to Trav is go out and play your own way. He has a bright future ahead."

On Josh Hazlewood: "He was a little bit sore yesterday so we just tried to get him through. He pulled him up OK today."

On David Warner: "When we had 20 to go we couldn't find him. We looked everywhere in the stadium. He is fine. We didn't want to risk him. I think he will be alright for Adelaide."
