Bonucci really protesting strongly with the referee and feels that he's got a piece of the ball. It ricocheted off Sterling, but that is so much better from Sterling.

Harry Kane wins the ball in midfield and runs down the left. Phil Foden is screaming for the ball on the opposite side but Kane goes it alone and his shot is blocked by Leonardo Bonucci.

Shame it wasn't Son Heung-min in the box or else he'd have passed.

The two wingers - Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling - need to work better with Harry Kane. If Kane drops in when he likes to do, we need runners behind and need runners stretching the Italian back three.

England really could do with a goal. From open play ideally. But any goal will do really.

Sho: That is one awful half of football I've just watched. From both teams. From an England perspective so many players playing out position, no style of play, no confidence. Just awful.

Barely a chance worthy of the name apart from that early Gianluca Scamacca header. There was a small smattering of applause when the half-time whistle went. This may have been out of appreciation but more likely it was out of relief.

England have gone five consecutive matches without scoring in the first half for the first time since May and June 1985.

I think focusing on the positive - I really like the back three, especially Eric Dier. Really composed, really calm as a real figure. He's communicating well with the two defenders next to him. He's the one that is looking to break lines forward. Always looking to start the England attacks.

It's been a little bit uncertain on the right-hand side. Kyle Walker and Reece James - they haven't really been on the same wavelength with the ball. It's hard to see where that is heading at the moment.

If you're looking for positives, England still have a chance of avoiding relegation to League B.

The visitors lead at half time and are on their way to the finals of the Nations League as things stand.

Germany boss Hansi Flick is in animated conversation with his coaches and a piece of technology as the half-time whistle blows.

If you're looking for negatives, England have only scored one competitive goal since the 10-0 win in San Marino in November 2021.

Harry Kane's late penalty in Germany (a 1-1 draw) is their only goal in the four and a half games of this year's Nations League.

Gianluca Scamacca's effort off the post after five minutes was the best bit of the first half.

They can't get hold off the ball. The passing hasn't been up to the standards and there's ben too many misplaced passes. Not enough assurance when they're moving the ball. Italy just keep winning the ball back and getting back into possession.

That's the first real counter-attack England have had. In this last 10 minutes they have struggled to get hold of the ball.

Phil Foden crosses for England from a free-kick. Leonardo Bonucci heads it behind and Declan Rice looks mystified as the referee gives Italy a free-kick and not England a corner. Not sure what happened there.

Former Chelsea man Timo Werner has had just eight touches in the first half so far.

In comparison Hungary centre forward Adam Szalai has had 31, and got the all-important opener.
