Seriously though, as Russell said, wasn't it wonderful to see a dramatic match like that enjoyed by a captivated and clamourous crowd?

Amazing. And a reminder that sport can help us all forget our worries for a few hours.

Thanks Nick Kyrgios! Thanks Ugo Humbert! Until next time...

We have been thrilled by sport and had a crazy audience to enjoy it with us - we've all been missing that for so long. They put a smile on everyone's faces today.

    Kyrgios 5-7 6-4 3-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 Humbert

How on Earth did Nick Kyrgios pull through that one? He faced two match points in the fourth set ICYMI.

"I just remember down that end when I was a couple of match points down and somehow got out of it," he says.

"It was a strange match, there were some dark thoughts inside my head. It seems to be my career, I live to fight another day and hopefully I can continue to play tennis like that in front of you guys."

On his next opponent: "Dominic (Thiem) is a heck of a player, I played him one time five or six years ago but I am thinking about the doubles tomorrow."

  4. 'I tried to make him play'published at 12:25 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2021

    Kyrgios 5-7 6-4 3-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 Humbert

More from Kyrgios on the man he beat, French 29th seed Ugo Humbert: "He is a heck of a player. He played amazing tennis... I felt like the one thing I had on him is experience so I drew on that experience, playing in front of you guys, I tried to get my head down and make him play."

    Kyrgios 5-7 6-4 3-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 Humbert

Here are the thoughts of Nick Kyrgios...

"You guys were awesome again, honestly if you were in my head I was just thinking about all the **** I was going to cop if I lost that match.

"I don't know how I did that, it's one of the craziest matches I have ever played."

Kyrgios was stalled by the jeers for Thiem, but not by a marriage proposal which could be loudly heard on the microphone.

Is NK marriage material?! Not sure.

    Kyrgios 5-7 6-4 3-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 Humbert

Nick Kyrgios just loves "crazy" matches on this court.

Just 12 months ago he had a similarly dramatic match against Karen Khachanov, only then it was him who missed match points before recovering.

Not sure his third-round match against Dominic Thiem - whose name is greeted by a few jeers from the Aussies - will be on the Melbourne Park third showcourt though...

With the John Cain Arena crowd still going mad, Nick Kyrgios heads to the middle of the court for a chat with Jim Courier.

Kyrgios says it was one of the craziest matches of his career and reckons he was thinking about all the, erm, 'stick' he would receive if he lost that match.

More quotes from the main man shortly...

Ugo Humbert will feel absolutely gutted but he gave his very best. I also feel emotional for Nick Kyrgios because these are the moments you play for.

    Kyrgios 5-7 6-4 3-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 Humbert

Shaking his head in his chair, Kyrgios can't quite believe it.

Neither can Humbert, whose eyes are on stalks as he wanders off shellshocked.

Nick Kyrgios looks very weary now as he slumps in his chair, we'll find out on Friday how much he has got in his tank. Kyrgios played brilliantly from the end of the fourth set on. I think he's feeling pretty emotional.
