Indonesia's Veddriq Leonardo won the inaugural men's speed climbing gold at the Olympics.

A day after Aleksandra Miroslaw won women's speed gold, Leonardo joined the Polish climber in making history at the Games, beating China's Wu Peng in the final.

He took the title by just two-hundredths of a second in a time of 4.75 seconds and secured Indonesia their first gold at Paris 2024.

It was expected that the United States' Sam Watson would be favourite for the event but a small error in his semi-final saw him move into the small final to battle for bronze.

Having already broke the world record on his way to the quarter-finals, he then broke his own world record again with a time of 4.74 seconds to take home the bronze over Iran's Reza Alipour.

Elsewhere on Thursday, Great Britain's Erin McNeice qualified for the women's boulder and lead final by finishing seventh.

That will take place on Saturday, with the men’s boulder and lead final taking place on Friday morning from 09:15 BST.

Team GB's Toby Roberts and Hamish McArthur will both be looking to secure a medal.

British sport climbers Erin McNeice and Molly Thompson-Smith have work to do to reach the women's boulder and lead Olympic final in Paris.

McNeice finished 10th in the semi-final boulder section at Le Bourget Climbing venue, with Thompson-Smith in 19th.

The top eight climbers will progress to the final after points collected from Thursday's lead section are added to their boulder score.

McNeice's score of 59.6 points put her 4.4 behind eighth-placed Italian Camilla Moroni, while Thompson-Smith posted 9.8 from the four rounds.

Slovenia's Janja Garnbret occupies top spot, with France's Oriane Bertone and American Brooke Raboutou in second and third respectively.

Semi-final scores are scratched after the lead component and the competition is reset for Saturday's final.

Great Britain's Toby Roberts finished third in the Olympic sport climbing boulder semi-final, with compatriot Hamish McArthur eighth to put them in a strong position to qualify for Friday's final.

The semi-final is split into two elements - boulder and lead - with the second event taking place on Wednesday.

A maximum of 100 points are available for each of the boulder and lead semi-finals and Roberts, 19, scored 54.1 as McArthur, 23, scored 34.2.

Climbers must finish inside the top eight to reach Friday's final at Le Bourget.

Roberts, who won the European qualifying event last year to book his place in Paris, scored a controversial 9.9 of 25 available points on the first boulder after judges deemed he had not held the move for long enough.

He scored 9.7 and 9.9 on the next two boulders but reached the top of the final boulder to score 24.7 and put himself in a good position to reach the final.

McArthur competed third in the 20-strong field but managed to hold his position inside the top eight, scoring 9.9, 10.0, 9.3 and 5.0.
