Have Your Say

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS. THIS BOARD IS NOW CLOSED.

We now live in Ottawa, Canada, but spent our early years in Newcastle. On most of our visits "home" we have visited Maer and enjoyed it's peacefulness. We were last there in April and have read much about Darwin and Emma this year. We feel close to this history.

Our father John Dean Steventon bought us up at Sidway Hall. As Children we used to play in Maer Woods All 6 of us were christened at Maer

I have looked at all the photographs listed, this has made me decide to visit the village and follow up the history of Emma and Charles. I was born in Stoke and have have returned to the area as an adult after many years in London. It is fun to pursue the local history for oneself...I feel proud of this heritage. I shall take my overseas vistors there too, along with my uk friends. I hope they enjoy it as much as I do.

I walked around the church yard looking for descendants of the tilsley family who were, i believe residents/ owners of sidway hall, acording to the grave stones in Chebsey graveyard. an Ann Tilsley was my G G grandmother married to Wm Lycett. I found Maer Church a very peaceful place to be - no wonder Darwin used to sit and contemplate.
