FA Cup winners' 30th anniversary parade

1358: 1978 FA Cup final - full screening

1750: open-top bus arrives Cornhill
1800: 1978 team on Town Hall balcony
1900: 大象传媒 Big Screen switched-off

On Bank Holiday Monday 5 May 2008, players from the squad which lifted the FA Cup in front of a 100,000 strong Wembley crowd will take an open-top bus parade through Ipswich town centre - just like they did thirty years ago!

The former players will be joined by guest of honour Sir Bobby Robson, who guided Town to the famous 1-0 victory over Arsenal on 6 May, 1978.

The parade will make its way to the Cornhill, where thousands of fans are expected to join in with the party. Dress up in late 70s style!

The bus is due to leave Portman Road at 1700 BST and will take about an hour to wind its way around the town centre to Cornhill. It follows the route of the 78 bus.

Relive the match

Speeches will be made from the balcony of the Town Hall and full match screenings of听 the 1978 FA Cup Final will be replayed.

大象传媒 Radio Suffolk presenters James Hazell and Rob Chandler will host the event at the Cornhill. They'll be playing music from 1978 and giving a glimpse to how the radio station would have sounded if had it been on air at the time (we didn't begin broadcasting until 1990).

5 May 2008

James and Rob will introduce lots of archive footage from 1978 and well as recently recorded interviews with some of the star names including John Wark, Roger Osborne and Sir Bobby Robson.

Presenter Stephen Foster will be introducing the players on the town hall balcony and he'll be hosting a dinner in the evening.

大象传媒 Radio Suffolk's sports team of Mark Matthews and Bryan Knights will be broadcasting live from the town hall on 大象传媒 Radio Suffolk.

As well as covering the party on 5 May, 大象传媒 Suffolk's website will be running a series of features marking the 30th anniversary of Town's successful FA Cup campaign.

Park & Ride

The service will be free on Monday 5 May 2008. It runs from the London Road, Martlesham and Bury Road terminals 11am-8pm.

This day meant quite a lot to me because I used to work in the Colchester clothing factory that made the suits which the players wore to Wembley on the big day (I cheekily paraded around in Paul Mariner's jacket). I was there when they collected & tried on their suits (grey jackets/navy trousers) - and as a result I met all the players AND got their autographs which I still have in pristine condition! It was a fun & exciting day - and the icing on the cake was that they actually won the cup! Brilliant.

Top afternoon on the cornhill for a great team, what can you say about that man Bobby other than he is a ledgend, true gentleman and a whole lot more. Thanks for the memories of 78,81 and some wonderful players over the years, you will always be loved by the people of Ipswich.

A fantastic event for Bobby Robson and team this evening. A superb was to give the boys of 78 the 30 year send off. Bobby Robson deserved the Key to the City of Ipswich (or Town) Great to have the old team back well done to all who made this evening possible !!

Gary Steed
Fantastic achievement by a provincial Club indeed the last 50 years have been memorable maintainug our status in the top 2 divisions. Bigger fish than us have plummeted to the bottom tier of the football league

I was 13 years old on that day and will never forget watching the match on the tv at home. I am very much looking forward to seeing all the old team back in Ipswich again on the 5th May.

I'm not sure there is the need for celebrating an F.A. Cup win that happened 30 years ago?

Rick Bisset
I was born on the day Ipswich won the cup and Roger Osborne's sister was in the same maternity ward as my mother.I'll be there celebrating my 30th!

My mum worked at the Town Hall and on the day of the Parade when the team came in she and Mick Mills ended up on the floor as she opened the door for him he fell through. I was at Wembley on that magical day and it will always be a significant point in my life. I've moved to Portsmouth now but still a Town fan and try to get up to as many games as i can.
