We met with series producer John Mullen to chat about Artist’s Studio Unlocked
Can you sum up the Artist’s Studio Unlocked in a sentence?
Artist’s Studio Unlocked allows the audience to look around the studio of a leading British artist, allowing them to decide which objects to look at and in what order.
What is the aim of this project?
The project is about giving the audience the feel of ‘access all areas’ to a leading British artist’s studio, and giving users control over what they look at to discover more about the space.
We hope they will enjoy the sense of discovery once they are in the driving seat, and that it will reveal the secrets of being an artist in an exciting way.
Who made the Project?
It’s a collaboration between the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Arts team and The Swarm. It was produced by John Mullen and Colette Camden from ´óÏó´«Ã½ Arts and Simon Allen from The Swarm.
How does this project differ from what you usually work on?
On one level, it is similar to the kind of work we usually do – spending time with a great creative mind, and trying to make the best possible film about them. What is different is the way it is structured, in a non-linear way, which was very exciting.
How did this idea come about?
One of ´óÏó´«Ã½ Arts’ most successful strands is What Do Artists Do All Day, which allows viewers to see behind the scenes with a great artist. This project seemed like the next logical step.
What are you hoping to find out from this being on Taster?
We would like to know if the audience enjoyed being in control of the content; whether they felt it was enjoyable; and if it encouraged them to think about art in a different way.
What happens next?
If the pilot were successful we would love to create a similar experience with other artists, possibly in conjunction with terrestrial and digital programming. The concept could also be expanded to be used in relation to writers and musicians.
