The Inside Story

Global Beats is live at the Fringe 2017 and here's a bit about why and a list of the performers

Alongside 大象传媒 Research and Development we're working with a bunch of broadcasters, bands and performers to test out a new way of broacasting live content over the internet.

The technology behind this project is called SOMA, which stands for Single Operator Mixing Application. This may sound complicated, and if we’re honest, the technology is. But in essence SOMA is a vision mixer like you would see in a TV shows gallery, but within an internet browser.

You can get a whole more detail about it

The reason why we’re featuring SOMA on Taster is to continue testing the performance of the technology with live broadcasts. 大象传媒 Research and Development have been using SOMA at the Edinburgh Festival for the past few years, but the trails have not been publically available. This year we all felt it was ready to broadcast live from the festival to people at home.

Here is a little more about the five acts appearing on the programme, all chosen for this special Scottish edition of Global Beats:

Pronto Mama
An explosive, young 6-piece from the east end of Glasgow, Pronto Mama combine jazz, rock and indie sensibilities into an off-kilter but astonishing whole. With a rabid fan-base and an accomplished debut album 'Any Joy' recently released on the Electric Honey label; this uncompromising, progressive, brass-infused ensemble are sure to raise the roof with their eclectic sound.

Ela Orleans
Polish-born but Glasgow based Ela Orleans is a singer, songwriter, electronica producer and soundscape creator. Describing her music as 'Movies for ears', she has been slowly but surely winning over the global DIY underground, counting Thurston Moore and The Pastels amongst her many fans and supporters. Her most recent album 'Circles of Upper & Lower Hell' was recently shortlisted for the 'Scottish Album of the Year' Award and has been hugely acclaimed.

Auntie Flo
Fusing house, techno and breaks with African and Latin influences, Scotland's Brian D'Souza aka Auntie Flo has released an array of stunning albums and remixes for the Huntleys and Palmers label, gaining him worldwide acclaim and a 'Scottish Album of the Year' shortlist nomination into the bargain. Performing a unique set with a Senegalese singer for Global Beats in Edinburgh, his music and attitude shows a modern, collaborative, forward-thinking Scotland in action.

Lomond Campbell
Visual artist, Triassic Tusk label boss and member of the FOUND music and arts collective, Lomond Campbell is a busy man. Not too busy to have produced one of the finest albums of 2016 however in 'Black River Promise'. An acoustic set of songs, steeped in luscious string arrangements, it brings to mind classic songwriters such as Nick Drake and Tim Hardin, albeit with his own inimitable Caledonian brogue. He has recently been signed to the Heavenly Label, who are to re-release his incredible debut album.

Rachel Newton
Singer, songwriter and harpist, Rachel Newton is both a member of The Shee and the Furrow Collective, as well as being a lauded solo artist. Winner of the 大象传媒 Radio 2's 'Folk Musician of the Year' 2017 award, 'Scots Trad Musician of the Year' Award 2016 and a shortlisted nominee for the 'Scottish Album of the Year' Award for 'Here's My Heart, Come Take it', she brings a grace and elegance to songs in both Gaelic and English.
