The Inside Story

Dr Who Interactive Video The inside story

Presented by uptight alien, Commander Strax, this interactive film takes you on a journey through The Doctor’s Universe. Click to explore classic moments, download Doctor data or travel back in time to enjoy one of his many incarnations.

We met up with the Doctor Who, Multiplatform team.

What do you mean by "interactive video"?

It’s a short film with all sorts of extra content embedded in the video. On a traditional web page, this extra content would sit elsewhere on the page. But we’ve been experimenting with technology that lets us embed it within the video itself. So the viewer can explore interesting tangents as they watch.

Why make this rather than just a regular video?

The team recruited Commander Strax, the much-loved Sontaran, as presenter. He fed the audience clips of various Doctors in action, teasing fans with unanswered questions and whetting their appetite for the next series.

What’s up with the presenter? He seems a bit uptight.

Who, Strax? That’s just his way. He means well. And the great thing about him is that he has a unique relationship with the Doctor – he’s been both his friend and his enemy.

He’s also funny (albeit unintentionally), so we could have fun with the script. And it was really interesting to explore how Strax would have got along with all the previous incarnations of the Doctor.

Which of them do you think he would have got on with the best?

Hmm, probably John Pertwee. He was the third Doctor and used Venusian karate on his enemies whenever possible. He also once smashed someone’s head in with a rock. Strax would have liked that.
