What would you have done differently if you could relive your career?
Steve: I wouldn’t have picked up the cheques for the dinners, drinks and parties for all the liggers and hangers on around me. When my troubles started they all disappeared pretty quickly! My mum said: "Steve why do you pay for all these people. They won’t be around when the money runs out." And she was right. I have about three good friends that have stuck by me though.

Did you hate ‘80s rivals like Spandau and Duran?
Steve: There was an on stage rivalry but off-stage we were all mates and usually partying round at my house. I’m still very friendly with Gary and Martin Kemp from the band. It’s sad that the court case happened. They were life long friends. I had my run-ins with Boy George but we have a love/hate relationship now.

Have you been to see Taboo? (Boy George’s stage play about the ‘80s, cross-dressing, the Blitz scene, etc)
Steve: George told me that I was in it and invited me down to rehearsals. But I had a problem with the guy playing me. I told him: "Look, you’re playing me like a bitchy queen and I’m not like that." Then George got annoyed because he had to retrain the actor. But I respect George. I don’t have a grudge against anyone, well, except Marilyn. He is a nasty piece of work. I hear he’s writing his autobiography and is touting it to publishers.

He’s also got a new single coming out...
Steve: Oh, God. Has he?!

Thatcher and the Tories ruled the ‘80s. Did politics influence your music in any way?
Steve: Well, it was just the era of excess. It was the whole ‘greed is good’ thing. Looking back now it was a load of crap. It was pure stupidity. It was a bit like being on a sinking ship and not realising it.

So where did all the money go and were you earning a lot?
Steve: I wasted it on liggers, parties and picking up the cheques for everything. There was a lot of money coming in through the Camden Palace (which Steve ran together with pal and DJ Rusty Egan) and the band but I spent all of it. I can’t cry about it though. I got to see the world and educate myself and I can still do that. Other people are my education. As long as I’m around creative people, I’m fine.
