1998: Pope calls for reform in Cuba
Pope John Paul II called for an end to Cuba鈥檚 political and economic isolation during a historic visit on 25 January 1998.
He was the first pontiff to visit the Communist Caribbean island.
Speaking in the capital, Havana, the Pope urged the release of political prisoners and condemned US attempts to isolate the country.
