1986: Corazon Aquino becomes Philippines president

Corazon Aquino became president of the Philippines in February 1986, bringing to an end years of dictatorship under Ferdinand Marcos.

Mrs Aquino first entered politics following the assassination of her husband, the main political rival of Marcos.

During Marcos’ 20 years of rule, he was criticised for his family’s lavish lifestyle amid rising poverty in the country.
