1969: Charles de Gaulle resigns from presidency
French President Charles de Gaulle resigned from office on 28 April 1969.
A terse, three-line communiqu茅 was issued from the Elys茅e presidential palace, announcing his decision to step down after 11 years.
French Prime Minister, Maurice Couve de Murville, spoke of his 鈥減rofound sadness鈥 and said it was 鈥渁n event the gravity of which will very quickly appear to all people in France and in the world.鈥
