The entire population of Alderney turns up to greet the royal couple when they visit the island as part of their tour through the Channel Islands. Princess Elizabeth gives a speech in which she commends the bravery of the islanders under German occupation during World War II. Today Alderney has a population of 2,400 people. They are traditionally nicknamed either 'vaques' after the cows or 'lapins' after the rabbits that live on the island.
