1992: Church of England votes for women priests

The Church of England鈥檚 General Synod voted in favour of women priests on 11 November 1992.

The issue of ordaining women priests had divided the Church of England since it was first debated in 1975.

Women had been allowed to serve as deacons within the Church of England, enabling them to perform baptisms, marriages and burials.

The ordination of women in the Church of England began in March 1994.
