Nat Serache reports on the dramatic situation in Soweto, where the cars of white people have been burnt and individuals have become involved in clashes with the police. He describes officers shooting into a crowd, among whom two children died.

The Soweto Uprising of 1976 began peacefully on 16 June, when 20,000 school students marched to protest over the use of Afrikaans in education. Police officers fired on the marchers and violence erupted, a situation that was subsequently mirrored across the country. Although the protest was put down by the police, it challenged apartheid and attracted international condemnation of the authorities.
