Cecil Day-Lewis narrates this short film made for the arts discussion programme Monitor.
Using the text of Van Gogh's own letters, the programme explores the artist's life through his early sketches of Belgium and The Hague, as well as later paintings of the south of France and self-portraits.
Cecil Day-Lewis was the Poet Laureate from 1968 until his death in 1972. He was the father of actor Daniel Day-Lewis.
