The government has announced the official end of the foot-and-mouth crisis after almost 11 months.

More than four million animals - mostly sheep - were slaughtered, after the first signs of the disease were discovered in February 2001.

So huge was the cull, the Army had to be called in to organise the burning of animals on mass pyres and their burial in mass graves.
